Der Hampelmann or The Jumping Jack was an old small town toy store that had a reasonable selection of models back in the day. As has happened to so many others in that market segment in the 1990's it closed its doors. However, Joe Rivers was able to buy the last few kits off the shelves like the Monogram 1/48 B-58 Hustler and this Month's Showcase Model of the Month winner, the classic Monogram 1/72 scale Convair B-36 Peacemaker.

Although the Peacemaker sat on Joe's shelf for about 10 years he finally decided to take up the challenge back in 2001 to assemble and paint one of the largest plastic scale models ever produced. It was finally finished in 2005. Joe painted the air frame in one piece starting with the anti-flash white on the bottom and then the acres of silver covering the top and sides. A bit of chalk weathering was used to accent some of the various panels. The wing walkways are striping tape used on RC planes and are still holding firm after all this time. The canopy and nose glass were masked using the tried and true Scotch Invisible tape and X-Acto blade method. That's before all those nice pre-cut masks were available!
